Flagship Application FAQs - Priority Deadline Dec. 1

Priority Application Deadline for Spring 2013 Admission: December 1.


FAQs:


  1. I am a freshman.  Do I need to submit my URI transcript with my application?  No, please submit your high school transcript.  We will access your URI transcript on e-Campus after grades post before making our final decision.  
  2. The deadline is so soon.  Do I really need to submit three letters of recommendation?  Yes, one should be from your Chinese instructor.  The other two can be from a college professor, high school teacher, advisor, guidance counselor, coach, or employer.  
  3. Is December 1 the final application deadline?  No, December 1 is our priority deadline, which means that students who apply by that date will receive full consideration.  If space is available, other applications submitted prior to December 15 will be considered.
  4. If I am accepted, do I need to participate in the Flagship Winter Immersion Program?  Yes, please plan to be on campus for the Winter Immersion January 7-18, 2013.  More details will be sent directly to accepted students.
  5. If I am applying to Flagship, which Chinese course should I take in the spring?  If you are currently enrolled in CHN 101 or 102 and applying to Flagship,  contact Hsu Laoshi at iling.hsu.chinese@gmail.com for a permission number to register for CHN 112 in spring 2013.

If you were unable to participate in the Flagship student webinar on the Boren Awards, please visit the Boren Awards website, where you can view past webinars and learn about upcoming presentations (and of course access many more helpful resources).

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. Flagship students are typically a good fit with the Boren Scholarship program and are encouraged to apply for a Boren Scholarship to help fund the Capstone Year. Looking for an Internship for Summer 2013?

Under a new grant from Ford Foundation, the Hong Kong America Center – a non-profit consortium of Hong Kong universities –is announcing the South China Internship Program (SCI) a national competition for 20 American undergraduates to participate in a low-cost, high-quality “tandem internships”. The twenty American undergraduates will team-up with twenty same - age Chinese university students to spend eight weeks together in summer 2013 as interns in companies and NGOs in the booming Pearl River Delta of south China. The intern teams will work together in small teams on joint projects for their company hosts. Inspired by the 100,000 Strong Initiative, HKAC is looking for young Americans with strong academics and high motivation to explore their career potential involving China. Some knowledge of Chinese language is preferred. We kindly ask International Offices in American universities convey this information to eligible undergraduate students. Graduate Degrees and Summer Language Study at the Monterey Institute of International Studies

The Monterey Institute of International Studies is offering summer language scholarships for prospective students who are Flagship graduates! The Betty and David Jones scholarship will be granted to 50 or more students for summer 2013. Students may improve their language skills or learn a new language!

To qualify for summer language scholarships, candidates must also apply for a Monterey Institute degree program for Fall 2013. Deadline to apply for scholarship is February 1st, 2013. Please see their website for complete application instructions: go.miis.edu/jones

International Education Week 2012: November 12-16

“Falling Whistles: A Campaign for Peace in the Congo’’

The story of children who, armed with only a whistle, are sent to the front lines of Africa’s largest war. Interested in Graduate Studies in Translation or Interpreting?



We are most pleased to inform you of the new Graduate Studies in Interpreting and Translation program (GSIT), offered by the Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland (College Park).

We are now accepting applications for Fall 2013 admission and are writing to let you know about our GSIT degree program. Part-time and full-time study is available; classes will be offered during the day, evening, and on weekends to accommodate student schedules.

Interested applicants can select from these exceptional learning opportunities:
Interpreting:
·         Graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Consecutive Interpreting
·         Master of Professional Studies in Interpreting (with two tracks):
o   Conference Interpreting; or Public Service Interpreting

Translation:
·         Graduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Translation        
·         Master of Professional Studies in Translation (with two tracks):
o   Translation; or Translation and Localization Project Management

The University of Maryland's close proximity to the nation's capital ensures that GSIT students will have a range of internship opportunities in the areas of political, health, legal, education, and business communication. 2013 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program - Deadline Extended to November 20, 2012


Due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy, the deadline to apply for the 2013 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program has been extended to 11:59 pm Pacific Time on Tuesday, November 20. The application is available online at http://www.clscholarship.org.

CLS is a program of the U.S. Department of State and provides fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu.  

Prior to preparing their application, interested students should review the full eligibility and application information on the CLS Program website: www.clscholarship.org/applicants. Please note that Arabic, Chinese, Persian, Russian, and Japanese institutes have language prerequisites, which can also be found at this link.

Students from all academic disciplines, including business, engineering, law, medicine, sciences, and humanities are encouraged to apply. While there is no service requirement attached to CLS Program awards, participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers.
