  • The NSA has a variety of summer internship opportunities, including a Language Analyst program for students with Advanced proficiency in Chinese (ILR 2-2+).
  • If you are interested in applying, please visit the NSA website as soon as possible to begin the process, as applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

10/22: Boren Scholarships Webinar for Flagship Students

Dear Flagship Students,

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Hindi Urdu, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, and Turkish. Flagship students are typically a good fit with the Boren Scholarship program and are encouraged to apply for a Boren Scholarship to help fund the Capstone year. It may be difficult with your schedules, but if at all possible please try to attend a Chinese-related workshop! There is no limit to how many you can attend, so if you find a few that interest you, go right ahead!

Kindergarten Teaching Opportunity in Shenzhen

Are you looking for a teaching opportunity in China?  There is a kindergarten located in Shenzhen, China looking for teachers. Not sure if you have been to Shenzhen before? It is a wonderful metropolitan city, very close to Hong Kong. The kindergarten is very reputable in Shenzhen, with 42 faculties and over 160 kids. The term could be half-year or full-year, depending on the instructor. They have a website  (http://www.fdkids.org/). All the information is in Chinese.

9/6: Chinese Program Weekly Update: Cross-Disciplinary Asian Studies Networking Event - Please RSVP, Chinese Hollywood, and More!

Dear Students of Chinese:
I hope that the first week back has gone smoothly.  Please see below for important upcoming events and deadlines.  You are all invited to attend the networking event on the 12th, but are asked to please RSVP by Tuesday, 9/10 (details below):

  • 5:00-7:00 PM, IEP House Living Room (67 Upper College Rd.)
  • For all students of Chinese, regardless of class year.
  • DB and IEP/Chinese Flagship staff will lead this workshop.
  • Learn how to write effective resumes and cover letters in both American and international styles, and how to prepare for interviews and assessment centers in the U.S. and abroad. 
  • Learn how to start your resume in different formats for different purposes (jobs/countries), then bring your completed resume to Workshop II for feedback.
  • Pizza will be provided.
Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship
  • Must be a Pell Grant recipient.
  • Up to $5,000 (an additional $3,000 for critical languages like Chinese) for study abroad.
  • Attend an Information Session on Campus: Sept. 9, 11, 19, 24
  • Application Deadline: Oct. 1 for spring 2014

ACC Intensive Language Program - Spring 2014 Application Deadline: October 15, 2013

Attention Students with Intermediate to Advanced Chinese Proficiency: 
Are you looking to study in China in Spring 2014?

Pre-Capstone Flagship students can also consider applying.

The ACC Intensive Language Program’s Spring 2014 term is rapidly approaching, and now is a good time to recommend qualified students for this semester. Please inform them that there are Fulbright scholarships available from $1,500-$4,000. We also have international travel scholarships ranging from $1,000-$1,300. Any interested students should apply by October 15, 2013.

The ACC Intensive Language program is for students who have intermediate (at least 2-3 terms of college Chinese) to advanced Chinese language capabilities to study in Beijing. It is a program which is highly interactive, with individualized instruction and an innovative curriculum. Our classes are rigorous with the backbone of the program being our strict adherence to the language pledge.

After ACC, students can have the opportunity to apply to the ACC Field Studies or K-12 programs. All expenses for international travel (up to $1400) and in-country activities are funded by the Fulbright Hays GPA program. URI Chinese Program Bulletin Fall 2013: Welcome Back, September Events, Apply to be Matched with a Local Host Family!

Dear Students of Chinese:

Welcome to our newest URI Chinese language learners, and welcome back to all returning students! With over 200 of you taking Chinese and a growing community of Chinese-speaking faculty, staff, and students on campus, we will be offering many opportunities for you to put your Chinese skills to use right here in Kingston during the 2013-14 academic year. We encourage you to take part in as many opportunities as possible and to create your own. Be sure to scroll all the way down to learn about our new Local Host Family Program!

  • For Chinese Flagship Students only.
  • Returning Flagship students will share their experiences in China and at the Flagship Chinese Institute at Indiana University with the 2013 Cohort.

Local Host Family Program:
  • Apply to be matched with a local Chinese-speaking host family by September 15 (contact Erin for application).
  • For ALL students of Chinese
  • Students and families commit to meeting once per month, during which time they speak only Mandarin Chinese, for the entire 2013-14 academic year.
  • matching event will be held on Sat., September 28 from 5-6 PM prior to the Moon Festival Celebration.
