Massachusetts International Academy (MAIA), a young private residential school offering Chinese students one year of intensive English-language preparation before U.S. college study, is currently seeking full-time Student Advisors.

Job Description
The Student Advisor (SA) will assist Chinese students integrating to the United States, the University of Massachusetts system, and the local community.  The Student Advisor's duties consists of designing extracurricular activities, personal advising, academic advising and administrative duties.  Student Advisors live on campus in a dorm room and serve as "live-in" staff members. This is a full-time position that includes room and board and a diverse work schedule.  Candidates must be willing and able to work some nights, weekends, holidays as well as one on-call shift per week.  The position reports to the Coordinator of Student Programs.  Click “Current Students” at www.maiacademy.org to learn more.

Student Advising Responsibilities
  • Advise students by holding one-on-one meetings as well as monthly meetings with advisee group
  • Provide students with important advising information regarding students’ identified university program, study progress and attendance
  • Provide personal advising regarding the following; banking needs, cell phone service, mail systems and US culture
  • Submit monthly advising reports to administration
  • Coordinate with administration on visits to universities
  • Address student concerns compassionately and effectively
Extra Curricular Activities
  • Create, promote, and implement cultural student activities on and off campus
  • Advertise campus activities, events, and other important information
  • Design and run student-oriented educational programs throughout the school year
  • Integrate MAIA students with the local community by engaging them with local high schools and college partnership programs
  • Drive students in a 5-15 passenger vehicle to outside facilities and universities as needed including airport pickups/drop offs

Residence Life Responsibilities
  • Serve as a live-in staff member required to be on call once per week touring the building to ensure security and safety for all residents
  • Respond adequately in the event of an emergency which might be outside regularly assigned work shift
  • Update name tags, bulletin boards and conduct occasional room inspections in your assigned hallway
  • Create a comfortable and safe living space for students and staff

Administrative Duties
  • Properly communicate with students, staff, and faculty about MAIA’s policies and procedures as well as the University of Massachusetts
  • Assist instructors and coordinators with special requests and serve as centralized support
  • Sort student mail and manage student database information
  • Serve as a TOEFL Administer at MAIA’s ETS site

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to live on-campus in a student dorm
  • Ability to fully participate during staff training session (August 10-30, 2015)
  • Demonstrate cross-cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to plan, promote, and conduct cultural activities
  • Flexible and cooperatively works well as a student advising team member
  • Organizes and manages multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working closely with ESL students
  • Lived, worked or studied abroad for 6+ months a plus
  • Some Residential Life experience preferred
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of challenges international students are faced with
  • Experience using Google products including Gmail, Drive and Calendar preferred

Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; talk or hear
  • Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and frequently required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities are required pursuant to the State's vision screening and standards for a license to drive, which might include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and are representative of levels employee would encounter while performing the essential functions of this job

Additional Information
  • Full-time position with comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, STD, LTD, Life, 401K and paid time-off. 
  • $25,000 - $27,000 annually plus meals, room and board
