11/12: Confucius Institute Reading Room Opens!

The Confucius Institute at URI is pleased to announce the official opening of its Reading Room on Wednesday, November 12, 2014.  The Reading Room is located in the Confucius Institute conference room in the URI Library and has an extensive amount of Chinese language reading materials on a variety of topics at various proficiency levels available for student use.  Students may use the materials in the Reading Room or take them out for a period of 28 days.

Since Tuesday classes meet on Wednesday, November 12, the Reading Room will be open according to the Tuesday hours from 1:00-4:00 PM.

Fourth Annual "Get A Passport & Travel" Workshop - International Education Week 2014

As part of International Education Week 2014, the Boston Passport Agency and United States Postal Service (USPS) will have staff on the University of Rhode Island Kingston campus on Friday, November 21, 2014 between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM in Atrium 2 of the Memorial Union to process both new and renewal passport applications. This is an opportunity for URI students, staff, and faculty to apply for or renew their passports quickly and conveniently.

To assist students with the expense associated with applying for a first-time passport, the URI Office of International Education is offering to subsidize the passport application fee ($110 value) for the first 50 URI full-time, U.S. undergraduate students who complete an application, provide proof of attendance at an International Education Week event, and bring all required documents for their passport to the workshop. Please note, applicants will still need to pay a $25 execution fee to the USPS.

To be considered for the subsidized passport, students must complete and submit an application form to the Office of International Education by 3:30 p.m. on November 10, 12, 13, or 14, 2014. No late submissions will be accepted.

Free Summer 2015 China Program for College ROTC Students

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) is seeking applications from college ROTC students nationwide for summer 2015 China program.  The program is sponsored by Project Global Officer.  If accepted, full scholarship is guaranteed.

The program dates are June 12-August 16, 2015.  Instead of the traditional grammar and drill teaching, and staying in dorms/hotels, the ERAU program uses Chinese language to teach 3 subject matters, as well as providing home stay.  The subject matters are speech, applied cross-culture communication, and introduction to geography.  As a result of the design of the program, one should make great improvement in Chinese language as well as gaining subject and cultural knowledge.  88% students in 2014 program gained in their language proficiency.  Fieldtrips to famous sites are part of the program activities.

ROTC students who study Chinese language or Chinese heritage students who know some Chinese are eligible to apply.

11/6: URI Fellowships Info Session - Goldwater Scholarship

Are you a sophomore or junior interested in pursuing a research career (Ph.D.) and majoring in the sciences, engineering, computer science, or math? Have you maintained a high GPA(approximately 3.75+ GPA) and gained research experience?

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was authorized by U.S. Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater by establishing in his name an endowed recognition program to foster and encourage excellence in science and mathematics. 

In Spring 2015, the Goldwater Foundation will award undergraduate scholarships of up to $7,500 to Barry Goldwater Scholars for use during the 2015-2016 academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students—those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the 2015-2016 academic year—who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. 

In their applications, students must include a statement of interest in a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, detailing how their academic program and their overall educational plans will prepare them for their chosen career goal. It is expected that students selected as scholars will pursue advanced degrees. (Please note: Students who plan to study medicine as an MD/PhD are eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship only if they plan a research career rather than a career as a practicing physician with emphasis on the clinical practice of medicine and patient care.)

Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to $7,500 annually. Students who apply for a Goldwater as a current sophomore are eligible for up of two years of scholarship support (junior and senior years), and students who apply as current juniors are eligible for one year of scholarship support (senior year).

The project Reuse: disposable food packaging is a project by the Berlin based project group REINIGUNGSGESELLSCHAFT. 

Reuse is designed as an interdisciplinary open process to work with students from Art, Engineering, and Communication. Reuse will raiseawareness of disposable food and beverage packaging, encourage its avoidance and promote the use and reuse of natural resources.Disposable food packaging will be collected, granulated and transformed and designed in an engineering process. The project will enrich the discourse about a sustainable campus and help the university pioneer innovative ways to promote conservation, recycling and reuse of natural resources. Students learn problem-based approaches inside and outside the classroom and explore the complexity of circles and to translate it into a sustainable design. They will develop an understanding of interconnections within this interdisciplinary practice.

This pilot project will contribute to integrating interdisciplinary learning on problem-based solutions at URI. Sharing resources and knowledge will be one of the future sources. Art can be the gateway to develop holistic narratives.
