2015 Confucius Scholarship Program Now Open

The Confucius Institute at URI is now facilitating applications for the Confucius Institute Scholarship Program.  Applications are due April 15, and to be eligible URI students and URI CI-affiliated students must also take the HSK on March 28 (registration deadline for the HSK is March 18).

Confucius Institute Scholarships can cover:

  • A semester,
  • An academic year, or 
  • A full degree program
at a Chinese university.

URI students planning to study at Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, or Tianjin Normal University through the Chinese Flagship Program, IEP, or IBP during the 2015-16 academic year are encouraged to apply to help cover some of their costs.

URI Career Fairs March 4 & April 2

KINGSTON, R.I. – February 23, 2015 – The Center for Career and Experiential Education at the University of Rhode Island has announced two career fairs for the spring 2015 semester.

The Summer & Internship Job Fair will be held Wednesday, March 4, in URI’s Memorial Union Ballroom, 50 Lower College Road, from 11 a.m to 2 p.m.

The event attracts more than 400 students and other candidates seeking information about internship and summer job opportunities. The $150 registration fee for businesses or agencies provides each with a table, two chairs, signs, pre-fair advertising, lunch, parking and shuttle service for two company representatives.

The Spring Career & Job Fair will be held, Thursday, April 2, in URI’s Memorial Union Ballroom, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Job Opportunity: Confucius Institute Reading Room Assistant - Apply by 2/27


Position: Reading Room Assistant
Department: Confucius Institute
Location: Confucius Institute Conference Room at the University Library, Kingston Campus
Expected working hours: 5-10 hours per week for spring semester 2015; need to be able to work after 4:00 p.m.

Position Description: The Reading Room holds a collection of books and multimedia materials in Chinese language serving the community of the University of Rhode Island. The Reading Room Assistant will support the Reading Room’s daily operation and maintenance by providing assistance to guests, maintaining regulations, sorting materials and cataloging.

Qualification:  
  • URI undergraduate student
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic computer operating skills
  • Bilingual ability preferred (English and Mandarin)
Responsibilities:
The Reading Room Assistant provides support to the Reading Room daily operation and maintenance by:
  • Receiving visitors to the Reading Room
  • Explaining the Reading Room regulations to visitors
  • Helping visitors with inquiries and book searches
  • Monitoring activities in the Reading Room
  • Completing borrowing and returning procedures for visitors
  • Sending due date email reminder
  • Assisting in sorting and cataloging of new materials: numbering and labeling
Application Process: The applicant will need to submit a resume and a cover letter (no more than one page) through email. Interview will be scheduled upon receipt of the application. The interview procedure consists of a preliminary and a final interview with director of Confucius Institute. Applicants will be informed promptly whether they are eligible to move on to the next stage.  Applications must be submitted before Feb. 27th, 2015.

IEP/IBP Hasbro Scholarship Applications Open - Due March 15

We are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the IEP and IBP Hasbro Scholarship at http://web.uri.edu/languages/chinese-scholarships/

If you are in the Chinese International Engineering or International Business Program, and planning to begin a study abroad program in China or Taiwan in Summer 2015, Fall 2015, or Spring 2016, you must apply during this round.

URI Flagship Scholarship Applications Due March 1

Applications are now being accepted for URI Flagship Scholarships to support Flagship Students for domestic or overseas study during Summer 2015 and also for the Capstone Year in China during Fall 2015, Spring 2016, or the entire 2015-16 academic year.  NB: Flagship students who plan to apply for Spring 2016 admission to Capstone should apply now for Flagship Scholarships.

RIFLA COLLEGE STUDY STIPEND

The Rhode Island Foreign Language Association (RIFLA) is offering a study stipend of $500 for a
College Student who is a Foreign Language Major, and is planning to study abroad. Professors
who nominate students must be members of RIFLA. Deadline for nominees is March 15.

*Recipients of this stipend will not be eligible for other RIFLA stipends during the same
calendar year.
*The stipend will be awarded at our spring dinner meeting in May; attendance is mandatory.

published in the RIFLA Newsletter
